Glasshoughton (new)

At the south of Glasshoughton the colliery and its pit stacks and adjoining coking plant have disappeared to be replaced by a complex that includes the Junction 32 (formerly Freeport) shopping village and the Xscape ski and leisure centre.

Adjacent to Junction 32 is Xscape a real snow indoor ski complex with restaurants, multiscreen cinema and  nightclub. Nearby is a B&Q do-it-yourself superstore.

At the end of the road on the roundabout is a sculpture marking the colliery. It is called the Wheel of Light or locally "Winnie's Wheel".

More information about the new developments is available at the Waystone site.

The shopping village and Xscape are adjacent to Junction 32 of the M62, between Castleford and Pontefract at the south end of Glasshoughton (it is on part of the land where Glasshoughton colliery and coking works stood). Plenty of parking spaces including those for the disabled.

There are regular bus services from Castleford, Pontefract, Leeds and Doncaster.

A railway station and an hotel are next to the complexes.

Wakefield College is constructing a skills academy on the site.
