Welcome to Castleford. Located just off Junctions 31 and 32 of the M62 motorway and just a few miles from the A1 Castleford is a friendly and lively destination for visitors. Shop at the Junction 32 Designer Outlet Village, be entertained at Xscape or watch Rugby League at the Jungle. Castleford has this and more. The town has a population of around 40,000. Castleford grew as a centre of industrial activity in the nineteenth century but its history goes a lot further back. Recently the skeleton of a bronze age lord together with the remains of his chariot were discovered in Castleford's Fryston woodland. The Roman fort of Lagentium, situated within what is now the town centre, has revealed so many important finds that there is now an active campaign to build a Heritage Centre within Castleford town centre. The statistics; Castleford has a population aged 15 plus of 36953 in 19675 households. Of
these 17801 are men and 19152 are women. Of the total population 12788 (around
one third) are 55 or over. Of the total population 24108 (around two-thirds) are
in social classes C2 to E. There are 5455 pupils on the rolls of all Castleford
schools of which 2400 are in the two high schools.
