Located between the town centre and Glasshoughton is Smawthorne. The area has
a small park (the Valley Gardens), a new playground and an environmental attraction called Smawthorne Marsh.
A few years ago the Smawthorne area had
environmental improvements including sculptures such as this one by
Ailsa Magnus
.
Just beyond the Valley Gardens, the marsh used to be an area of private
allotments but it became flooded. It is now home to a variety of wildlife
and is a popular green walk within this urban area.
The Valley Gardens, a park conveniently
close to the town centre, which has a young children's play area and a
beck running through. The video on the right is a walk through the park.
There is a
memorable of stone arches with brass (Henry Moore Square at Smawthorne) where the house in
which Henry Moore, the world famous sculptor, was born (30 Roundhill Road).
After the house was demolished a memorial garden was erected. This has
now been replaced by the Henry Moore Square memorial. The arch at the left
in this picture is situated where the font door of the house used to be.
Part of Carlton Street is also called Henry Moore Square. More information
on the Henry Moore page.
